Hindman, Ky to Buckhorn, Ky – 50 miles
Today was somewhat of an easy day. Slept in a bit, woke up around 9 or so. I don’t know if I mentioned it in my previous post, but Max had also made it to the Historical Society. He decided to take a rest day today because the person he is meeting in western Kentucky won’t be there for another 10 days or so. Also David needed the help getting the hostel ready for all the summer cyclists. I wanted to keep moving, because this weekend I will be off the bike spending time with my girlfriend, Kari, in Evansville, IN. I’m definitely looking forward to a couple of days of the bike, and seeing my lovely girlfriend and awesome dog, Murph. I’m due for some quality time with a pup that doesn’t look like it wants to eat me for dinner.
By the time I made breakfast, packed up, and charged up my electronics it was nearly noon before I said bye to David and Max, and was on the road.
All in all it was a pretty uneventful day. Still really hilly, climbed nearly 4500 feet. Only a few dog encounters. The first ones I ran into were two dogs that saw me coming from a ways away. They ran out to the road, so I had to stop and walk my bike past them yelling “go on!” And “git!” in my best southern accent hoping they’d understand. They backed away slowly and let me pass.
The mountains were really pretty and although the climbs were tough at times the descents were a blast. Made it to Buckhorn Dam Campground around 7 PM. Made some dinner and was even able to grab a shower.
Plan is to ride to Berea, Ky tomorrow, about 60 miles. Already touched based with a Warmshowers host there, Maya. Looking forward to the possibility of a bed tomorrow night! 🙂
